The average teacher in the United States spends $500 of their own money on classroom academic materials each year. Today teachers are asked to do more with less time and money available. Spending money out-of-pocket while noble, puts a strain on each teacher and their family. It is my intention through the cyclocross race to help teachers at Centennial defray some of their personal costs so that they can continue to excel in academics.
In order to help teachers, an application will be available for legitimate academic needs. Teachers will be able to apply for money for projects, classroom materials, supplemental books and materials, educational DVDs, art supplies, lab materials, etc. Departmental budgets do provide money to support students but teachers often go above and beyond what is expected or accounted for in budgets. It is just a sign of our economic times.
If you are a staff member at Centennial, I hope you will consider contributing to the race in some way. Perhaps adopt a portion of the course as a fan and come out to spectate, maybe volunteer to help put on the race or perhaps encourage students to participate, race and come to the event.
If you are a student, understand that this is ultimately to help you. Your teachers never tire in figuring out new ways to help you learn. We welcome your involvement.
If you are a parent we hope that you and your child can come to the race as a volunteer, spectator, and spread the word throughout the community. Of course, you can always race too!
